A night spent at one of these centers can tell you if you should be be getting apnea treatment. As this is a relatively serious condition, treating apnea is not something to be taken lightly. The disorder can lead to insufficient oxygen available to your body as a result of all the breathing interruptions. Some of which can last up to 10 seconds.
Here's the typical categories of problems apnea suffers may experience.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is where your airway literally collapses during sleep which disrupts breathing for as long, like I said, as 10 seconds. This happens repeatedly all night long. Your brain recognizes you aren't breathing. It wakes you up just enough to breath. Then you slip back to sleep. OSA can be mild to severe. When this wakefulness happens several hundred times a night you it costs you needed sleep time. As a result you suffer from excessive sleepiness then the next day.
Central sleep apnea (CSA) is thought to be more serious. In this case your brain fails to signal the muscles that control breathing to work. So you don't. And you don't breathe.
While some who sleep on their backs may suffer from positional apnea.
Now dental appliances can provide snoring relief in some cases.
Others opt for surgery to surgically remove the cause of their snoring.
And when it comes to apnea treatments many find relief through the use of a CPAP machine at home. "CPAP" standing for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure -- which is what such devices deliver. Not new, this approach has been found to be the best, most effective way to keep your upper airway open. And the results those who actually use the machine are remarkable. Making it the preferred treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.
