Care and Feeding of CPAP Machines

Did You Know Sleep Apnea Machines Require TLC?

Joanie Borack freely admitted, "It's not very romantic to sleep with a mask on. And CPAP machines are not exactly a carefree to operate either."

She went on, "Despite the 30 second, well okay, maybe 15 minutes of training you'll get, read the manual. Manufacturer of CPAP machines write this stuff for a reason you know."

"Then you're going to have to clean your CPAP machine. Regularly. While bleach sounds like a great solution, chlorine is not exactly plastic-friendly - even if you rinse it off afterwards. "

"For that reason vinegar might be a better option," Borack added. "Other alternatives may be baby shampoo or ivory liquid."

Here's a simple cleaning routine.

Once a month rinse out all hoses with a vinegar and water solution (1 part vinegar, 10 parts water) letting them soak for 10 minutes.

Empty your humidifier chamber every other day. Refill with fresh distilled water before bed. Wash it once a week with the vinegar solution and let it air dry.

And don't' forget your CPAP Mask. Wipe off the interior surface every day with warm lint free cloth. And give it a good cleaning at least twice a week. Take it apart and wash it in soapy water, rinse and then let air dry

"Keep in mind how much care sleep apnea machines might get in a hospital," Joanie pointed out "At least it gives you something to shoot for when it come to the TLC you employ, don't you think?"
