What is Apnea and How Is A Sleep Apnea Diagnosis Made?

Ferreting Out Sleep Apnea Causes - Getting to
the Bottom of What's Causing You To Lose Sleep

Julian Bjorn was one sleepy parts counter guy. No matter when he went to bed he woke up cranky, with a headache and feeling like he didn't sleep a wink.

His wife Stephanie kinda felt the same. But that was because she couldn't sleep since he was delivering a snoring serenade to her all night - every night.

After much prodding by Stephanie, Julian ended up spending the night in a sleep clinic. With electrodes glued to his head to track brain waves. He had other leads to monitor his heart and eye movement, Others still were attached to watch the level of oxygen in his blood. While straps wrapped around his stomach and chest measured his breathing. With all this he was supposed to sleep?

"Like everything else there are definite sleep apnea signs," said Julian. "The most obvious in my case was my snoring. All that other stuff was to confirm the initial sleep apnea diagnosis that my doctor made."

"But my airways were seizing up about 40 times a hour. So I was being woke up to breathe. Which I was told is hard on the ole ticker."

"When it came down to treating sleep apnea disorder, I had three options," Julian said.

"One, I could do nothing. Which c'mon is that really an option?" he asked.

"Two," Julian went on, "I could make like the Lone Ranger and sleep with a mask on. (Who is that masked man?) It's hooked up to a glorified air pump that blows air down into my lungs all night through a rubber hose. Effectively putting an end to my supposedly epic snoring."

"Or three, I could go under the knife to expand my air way through surgery to eliminate the cause of sleep apnea. But it seems it's only effective about 4 times out of 10. Which may be great in baseball but didn't sound so great to me."

So my sleep apnea diagnosis lead to getting a sleep apnea cpap machine. It's a critical part of your apnea treatment.
